Causes of Irregular Menstrual Cycle
Menstruation that women experience during the period from ovulation to menstruation usually occurs in the form of a cycle. The duration of this cycle can vary between 21 and 45 days, but most women have their periods every 28 days. Menstruation less than 21 days or more than 45 days late is an abnormal condition.
Menstruation is identified by monthly vaginal bleeding. The first day of the cycle is considered the day the bleeding started. This is controlled by changing hormone levels in the body. The main operating center of hormones is the hypothalamus in the brain. The hormone GnRH produced by it controls the production of hormones from the pituitary gland. As the levels of these hormones change cyclically, changes occur in the ovaries accordingly.
Ovulation occurs in the ovaries during the first 14 days of the menstrual cycle. During this period, the ovaries mainly produce the hormone estrogen. It creates a suitable environment for the implantation of a conceived embryo on the inner wall of the uterus. By the 14th day, an egg is released from an ovary. After that, the progesterone hormone continues to be produced for about 10 days from the point where the egg was released from the ovary. These cells then shrink and the level of progesterone hormone in the blood decreases. Because of this, the inner wall of the uterus breaks down and bleeding starts.
The above hormonal cycle can be disrupted due to various reasons. Due to reasons such as excessive exercise and mental stress, the production of hormones from the hypothalamus area of the brain is irregular and menstruation becomes irregular. If the body weight increases too much, the chemicals produced by the fat layer can also cause this hormone function to become unbalanced. Also, due to conditions that do not respond to ovarian hormones (such as polycystic ovarian syndrome), menstruation can become irregular. Premature ovarian failure can also sometimes cause irregular periods.
If your menstrual cycle is irregular, it can hinder conception. If you are a pregnant woman, you should seek medical advice. But if the menstruation of a young woman who is not expecting children is irregular, then there is no need to worry about it. However, if menstruation is delayed for more than three months, medical advice should be sought as it can rarely lead to cancerous conditions of the uterus.
Treatment varies depending on the cause of menstrual irregularity. After examination, a doctor will prescribe treatment if necessary. A medicine containing the hormone progesterone is often given for this purpose. Bleeding occurs after stopping the medication. But hormone therapy cannot prevent menstrual cycle irregularity again. Therefore, it is sometimes necessary to examine and treat the underlying cause.
